Some datails about ATX power connector

When it comes to ATX power connector, we first need to know ATX power, the function of which is to convert the power supply of AC 110-220V into that of DC 5V, 12V and 24V, used in the computer. Compared to AT power supply, when ATX power is shut down, it is not completely cut off but maintained a relatively weak current, which it uses to add a power management function. Through this function, users can directly realize soft shutdown through the operating system, and can also realize network power management. There is no doubt that ATX power connector is to connect to the motherboard. This article will introduce several kinds of connectors and what the pin of different colors is for.

1. What is each kind of connector for

There are six kinds of common connectors. Take the following picture for example:

Each kind of connector

Name

Function

Main power connector

Power the motherboard (20+4 pin)

Serial ATA power connector

power hard drives and optical drives (15 pin, 5-wire)

CPU power connector

Power the CPU (4 pin, 8 pin)

GPU power connector

Power the GPU (6 pin, 8 pin)

Large D-port power connector

power to old IDE devices, such as hard disk and optical drive of IDE connector

Fan RPM monitor

Power the fan, monitor and control the fan speed of CPU

2. What is the pin of different colors on connector for

There are nine kinds of colors on connector as the following picture and they have different functions.

The pin of different colors on connector

1. Orange (+3.3V): Provides power for memory. The voltage requirement is strict, the output is stable, the ripple coefficient is small, and the output current is large, which needs more than 20 amperes.
2. Blue (-12V): Provides logic judgment level for serial port. The required current is small, generally less than 1 ampere.
3. Black (0V): The power line is ground line, and other power lines need to be used in conjunction with it to supply power for the computer.
Tips: ATX power supply is divided into several parts, each part must have a ground wire. If several parts share a common ground wire, its work efficiency will be greatly reduced. So, there are 8 ground wires totally.
4. Red (5V): The working voltage provided to CPU, PCI, AGP, ISA and other integrated circuits is the main working power supply in computer. The quality of its power supply is directly related to the stability of the computer system.
5. Green (PS_ON): Through the electrical level control power on. When the signal level of the port is greater than 1.8V, the main power is off; If the signal level is lower than 1.8V, the main power supply is on. When it is short circuited to the ground, it will start the power supply.
6. Gray (PWR_OK): Monitoring line, which plays a signal feedback role.
7. White (-5V): It provides a method to judge the level for logic circuit and is not essential.
8. Purple (+5VSB): ATX power supply provides + 5V 720mA power supply to the motherboard through pin9, which provides power for WOL (wake up on LAN) and boot circuit, USB interface and other circuits. (Power is still supplied after shutdown)
9. Yellow (+12V): Generally, it provides power supply for spindle motor and seek motor of hard disk, optical drive and floppy drive, and provides working voltage and serial port circuit logic signal level for ISA slot.
