AMD Chipsets Comparison: TRX40 vs X570 vs X399 - Up to Date
Some time ago, AMD released TRX40 chipset specifically designed for AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen Threadripper processors. This chipset will replace X399 as the highest-end chipset for Threadripper processors. And AMD X570 is the highest-end chipset for Socket AM4 supporting AMD Ryzen 3000 Series processors. So, what are the difference of them? In this post, we will make a comparison of TRX40 vs X570 vs X399 and show you the detailed differences of them.
To make it clearer and more straightforward, we make a table about the key specifications' comparison of these three chipsets.
Chipsets | TRX40 | X570 | X399 |

As shown in the table above, the specifications of these three chipsets are extraordinarily powerful and they have so great expandability as well as flexibility. But there are some differences of them such as processor socket type, PCIe 4.0, TDP, etc. Let's take a close look at these three chipsets in detail.
TRX40 vs X570 Chipset
At present, TRX40 is the highest-end chipset for AMD Threadripper processors while X570 is the highest-end chipset for Socket AM4. They are both the first choice for enthusiast players. So, what are the differences between TRX40 vs X570?
Actually, the structure of TRX40 chipset is very similar to that of X570. They both come with 16 PCIe 4.0 lanes for peripherals and 12 SATA 3.0 ports. Besides, the number of USB 3.2 G2 and USB 2.0 are almost the same. Owing to high power consumption, they are both equipped with their own fan system to cool down. These are what they have in common.
There are still some differences between TRX40 and X570. For example, they are prepared for different kinds of platform so their processor socket types are not the same. TRX40 chipset supports quad channel memory but X570 only supports dual channel memory. Additionally, TRX40 has more USB 3.1 G1/G2 than X570. In terms of TDP, TRX 40 chipset is higher than X570 chipset. Although they almost have the same ports and connections, the 3rd Gen Threadripper processors have more threads and need more power consumption. Hence TRX40 chipset comes with 15W TDP while X570 has a TDP of 11W.
TRX40 vs X399 Chipset
As mentioned above, TRX40 replaces X399 as the next generation chipset for AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors. Let's compare TRX40 and X399 chipsets in detail.
CPU socket type. It is worth mentioning that TRX40 and X399 chipsets are not interchangeable. The processor socket of TRX40 is sTRX4 while that of X399 is TR4. Although they use the same number of socket pins (4094), the sockets are incompatible with each other due to different pin layouts.
PCIe Lane. Another noticeable difference between TRX40 and X399 is PCIe Lane. TRX40 chipset is the first HEDT platform supports PCIe 4.0 which can bring extra bandwidth advantages for PCIe devices while X399 only supports PCIe 3.0. Besides, the number of max PCH PCIe lanes of TRX40 is up to 72, 6 more than that of X399.
Ports and other slots. Relative to X399 chipset, TRX40 has more ports and slots. The number of USB 3.1 G2 of TRX40 is up to 12 while that of X399 is 2. The number of SATA interfaces of TRX40 also increases from 12 to 20.
Memory support. Compared with X399, the maximum memory frequency supported by TRX40 chipset receives a slight increase from DDR4 2933 MHz to DDR4 3200 MHz. But both of them support memory overclocking.
TDP. Due to the high-power requirements of PCIe 4.0 and processor, the TDP of TRX40 chipset is much higher than that of X399, up to 15W and it need to be equipped with its own cooling system.
X570 vs X399 Chipset
There are lots of differences between X570 and X399 chipsets. X399 is the chipset of previous generation of Threadripper processors, so it is slightly weaker than X570 in terms of expandability and performance. The remarkable difference between them is the socket type of processor. Moreover, X399 doesn't support PCIe 4.0. However, X399 supports quad channels memory and whereas X570 only supports dual channels memory. The above are the main differences between X570 and X399. In other aspects, such as TDP, ports and expansion slots, X570 chipset is greater than X399 chipset, but the gap is not so much. More details can be referred to the contents above.
