RAM Benchmark Test: Does Brand of RAM Matter?
When we are choosing a ram, the choice of brand is always a headache, especially for some novices. As we all know, capacity, frequency and DDR type are several key factors that affect the performance of RAM. But does RAM brand matter? Does the brand have any impact on the performance of RAM? This article will conduct a memory benchmark test to compare the difference in performance in the case that RAMs have the same specs but different brands and then show you the brand of RAM matters or not.
For the accuracy of test result, we use the controlled variable method. We separately insert the RAM of different brands on the same computer, and then use the same software to test the performance of RAM. The following chart is about the computer components and software used in this test.
RAM Benchmark Test | |||
---|---|---|---|
CPU | i5-9400f | Motherboard | ASUS TUF B360m plus Gaming S |
Graphics Card | Manli GeForce GT730 2G DDR3 | Hard drive | Intel SSD 760P 250G |
RAM specs | DDR4 2666Mhz 8G single channel | RAM brand | Gloway, G. Skill, Kingston |
Benchmark test tool | AIDA64 Cache & Memory Benchmark |
Then, let's start testing. The first test is RAM of Gloway.
Then the second is RAM of G. SKILL.
The last test is RAM of Kingston.
Finally, we make a chart for the test results as summary.
As can be seen from the table, in the case that the RAMs have the same specifications but different brands, the speed of read, write, and copy and latency of RAM are almost the same, which indicates that there is little difference in performance of RAM. It further demonstrates that the brand doesn't matter to the performance of RAM.
But it doesn't mean that we can completely ignore the RAM brand when choosing RAM. On one hand, different manufacturers use different techniques and materials to product RAMs, which have a great impact on the quality and lifespan of RAM. On the other hand, different manufacturers provide different warranty and after-sales services. Generally speaking, some top RAM manufacturers like ADATA and Corsair perform better in this, which is the reason why their RAM will be slightly more expensive.
Bottom Line
Does it matter what RAM slots I use? The answer is yes but not much. The RAM brand has little impact on the performance of RAM. But when choosing RAM, the brand of RAM is also one of factor that can't be ignored. A good brand is the guarantee of quality.
