How to Solve Google Chrome Audio Not Working in Windows 10
Google Chrome, a quite popular browser, serves for millions of people worldwide. A large amount of users watch the news, see a movie and listen to music by this excellent browser. While some users reflected that Chrome cannot play sound normally. What's going on? Note: The operations and screenshots here were based on the latest version of Chrome. Some layouts may change slightly as the version updates. This article will be updated accordingly.
1. Check the Volume and Mixer
Firstly, what you need to do is to check if accidentally mute the volume or Chrome browser in Volume Mixer.
Step 1: On the bottom right of task bar, you can find a volume icon. Check it is working properly, with no cross beside.
Step 2: Right-click the sound icon -> Open Volume mixer, and check the Chrome Browser is on mute or not. If it is shown as the picture below, please unmute it first, and turn up the volume to a reasonably high level.
2. Restart Windows Audio Service
Sometimes, the sound issue may come out of Windows audio fault. Let's try to restart the audio service to fix it as steps below:
Enter services.msc in the windows search box, tap on Enter. A window named Services pops up. Navigate to Windows Audio, right click on it and select Restart option.
3. Unmute A Specific Site in Chrome
If you are surfing a specific site, like Youtube or Spotify, the sound can't play while other websites can. It is probably that you mute it with one click or two by accident. Unmute the specific site by following steps (take Youtube as an example):
Open the website, right-click the tab on the top, and then select Unmute site.
4. Enable Sound for All Websites
In Chrome browser, there is a native setting in which you can add a website to blacklist or whitelist for sound playing. Check this setting to make sure sound for all websites are allowed:
Copy-paste chrome://settings/content/sound in Chrome address bar, and hit Enter. In Settings-Sound interface, make sure the option for Allow sites to play sound (recommended) is toggled to "ON" (on the right side) and there is no site under the Mute tab.
5. Disable Chrome Extensions
Extensions enable users a better browsing experience in Chrome. While sometimes they may become the culprit for the sound issues. Check if the extensions affect the sound by such a way:
Step 1: Press Ctrl + Shift + N to start incognito mode of Google Chrome. You can browser privately under this mode, which is isolated from the browser's main session and user data. Generally, if the sound plays normally in incognito mode, it is probably that the extensions are malfunctioning. Now, you can disable Chrome extensions one by one to check which one went wrong.
Step 2: Type chrome://extensions on a Chrome tab and press Enter, then a list of extensions embedded in your Chrome browser can be seen. Click the button in the lower right side to disable them.
6. Clear Cookies and Cache in Chrome
Cookies and cache are files created by browsing websites, which optimize your online experience and boost the surfing speed. If the browser has collected too much cookies and cache, it is vulnerable to faults, including sound error. Try to clear them by following ways:
Copy chrome://settings/clearBrowserData to the address bar, and tap on Enter. Select the items you want to clear like the screenshot shown below, next click on Clear Data.
Alternatively, you can press the keys Ctrl + Shift + Delete simultaneously to pop up the Clear browsing data window in Chrome browser.
7. Update the Audio Driver
An out-dated audio driver may result in no sound issue on PC. Thus, it is advisable that update the audio driver for your PC to get sound back in Chrome.
Right-click This PC -> Properties -> Device Manager -> double click Sound, video and game controllers in the middle column -> right click on the sound device -> select Update driver option.
8. Reinstall the Chrome Browser
If the above methods didn't go into effect, try to reinstall Chrome browser to fix audio problem. The procedures are as following:
Step 1: Close the Chrome browser, right-click taskbar -> select Task Manager. Under the Processes tab, navigate to Google Chrome, right-click it and select End task to turn off it.
Step 2: Click Start -> Settings -> Apps -> Apps and Features tab, navigate to Google Chrome, right-click it and choose Uninstall.
Step 3: Download Google Chrome online and reinstall it on the PC.
